How Solar Energy Works

Solar energy works through a blend of technology, economics, and customer service. It all starts with the sun, which sends enough energy to earth every hour to power the world for a year. With the right tools, you can capture your share and run your life on sunlight. Hallberlin Homes brings it all together, making the switch to solar simple and stress-free.

Own Your Own Power The clean, Renewable, Sustainable Way

  1. Sunlight & Solar Panels: When photons from sunlight hit the negatively charged top layer of solar panels, electrons get knocked loose. Those free electrons are drawn into an electric field between the negative top layer and the positively charged semiconducting silicon of a photovoltaic cell, creating a flow of Direct Current (DC) electricity.
  2. Power Inverters: Since AC power is the standard for household appliances, the DC current from solar panels needs to be converted before being added to a home's power supply. A power inverter is wired in to perform this conversion, creating a gateway between a solar array and a home's main electrical panel.
  3. Electrical Panels: To add solar energy converted to AC current to a home's power supply, the main electrical panel gets new wiring and circuit breakers. The electrical panel then distributes the solar power to circuits throughout the home.
  4. Your Power Meter: Rewiring the power meter attached to your home to track electricity flowing both to and from the house provides an easy solar energy storage resource. This tracking and billing arrangement, called 'net metering,' enables utility companies to credit your account for the power you produce or accurately bill you for the power you consume.
  5. The Power Grid: Solar panels produce the most energy during the middle of the day when demand for electricity is lower. For most homeowners, staying connected to the power grid allows them to store surplus solar power during the day and draw needed power at night when their solar panels go inactive.
  6. Mobile Controls: Maximizing the convenience and savings of solar power depends on optimizing your home's energy efficiency. The power inverters installed come with a mobile app, offering an intuitive control panel to monitor energy production and adjust settings from anywhere, keeping solar costs to a minimum.
